My Own Father's Engagement

Picture this: a dad, a bar, a daughter-turned-matchmaker, and a love story that could give any rom-com a run for its money.

One fateful evening, I get a text from my dad—yes, my grown-a** father—containing a blurry photo of a mysterious woman perched at the end of a bar. No caption, no warning. Just the digital equivalent of a wink and a nudge: “Should I talk to her?”

Cue my instant promotion to undercover dad-dating consultant. I’m now fielding covert ops selfies and doling out sage wisdom like, “Dad, maybe just say hi instead of channeling your inner James Bond.”

But, because dads will dad, he ignores my advice and opts for sending her a drink—then bails with an Irish goodbye faster than you can say “missed connections.” That mysterious lady? Spoiler: Lisa.

Flash forward: fate (or maybe the universe just rooting for my dad’s love life) brings Lisa back to the bar. This time, he actually listens to his wise daughter, shoots his shot, and—boom!—suddenly they’re not just exchanging drinks, they’re about to be exchanging engagement rings!

Next thing I know, Dad is hounding me for engagement photos like he’s waiting for concert tickets to drop. “Is it time? Are you free? What about now? What about later? What about right now?” I’ve never seen a man so eager to pose for pictures—except maybe me as a toddler in a Halloween costume.

Naturally, I made him sweat it out. If you can ghost your daughter’s advice, you can wait for your closeup, Dad.

The day finally comes. That morning, Lisa slides him a bread tie as a makeshift engagement ring—because apparently, inside jokes are their love language. Little does she know, he’s about to one-up her in the proposal game for real.

Standing behind my camera, I’m ugly-crying and trying to focus the lens while Lisa is tearing up too.

All I can think is: from cryptic bar photos to this. Sometimes, life throws you the wildest, most wonderful plot twists.

Lisa, thank you for not running away from the weird guy at the bar. Dad, congrats on finally realizing your daughter is always right.

I’m over the moon for you both. Now go get hitched—and don’t even think about eloping without your resident photographer/dating guru!

And Dad… next time, just listen to your daughter. I promise, I’m rarely ever wrong.
